from Differences - visions of contemporary composition, released January 7, 2017
Wilhelm Matthies, born 1959, studied visual arts at the Universities of South Carolina and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. When studying at U. Of Illinois-Chicago, he began an interest in designing acoustic instruments based on blending aspects of historical instruments from around the world.

Matthies has been working on the mosesa since 2012. It is based on a blend between the Chi-nese Erhu, a very early version of the Indian Veena, the Korean ajaeng and the European viol family, in particular the cello. It’s unique sound quality stems from a mix of playing without a fretboard, using plastic bottle resonators, and using modern cello bowing techniques.

Instrumentally, Matthies’ mosesa pieces are mostly bowed, sometimes plucked, but always pushing the edge of sounds that can be made. Often the sounds are transitioning between har-monics, overtones and purer tones, while also being glissandos. The instrument is designed to have almost full access string harmonics. When performed, the constant shift in sound quality reinforces a central idea that the music expresses moments of impermanence viewed and heard from various simultaneous angles.

Wilhelm Matthies has collaborated with free improvisations using the internet with Paulo Chagas, John Daly, Matthias Boss, Stefan Schmidt, Bird Paradigma, to name a few, and live with Jason Wietlispach, Hall Rammel, Mark Mantel, Paul Westfahl, Cody Steinmann, Rick Ollman, Jay Mollerskov, Rob Lundberg, Albert Wildeman, Barry Paul Clark, Pat Reinholz, Nicholas Elart, and Reid Karris. He has likewise performed with graphic compositions, mostly in the studio but also live.

Matthies’ musical work has been published with the net labels….
Black Square, ilse, Classwar Karaoke, manyfeetunder/homemadelabel, Petroglyph, pany-rosasdisco.net and darkpebble-bluewave in compilations, group, solo, studio and live performance contexts.
