SOKUSHINBUTSU PROJECT is an Italian esoteric ambient / post industrial duo, born in 2020 by Massimo Mascheroni (ODRZ) and Enrico Ponzoni.
The term 即身仏 [Sokushinbutsu] (lit. "Buddha in his own body") refers to a particular Buddhist ritual, practiced starting from the XIIth century by some Japanese monks who, through a long and painful mental, physical and food praparation, culminating in death, predisposed their bodies to a process of self-mummification.
In March 2021 the first work "即身仏" is released for the Italian label IÖR. Sokushinbutsu Project creates a sound synthesis of the suggestions that this extreme ritual evokes in the two musicians. Later, the collaboration with the butoh dancers and performers Marco Casiraghi and Alessandra Zerbinati leads "即身仏" to become a real theater-dance show.
In January 2022 "5980 - Patto Generazionale " is released for the Norwegian label TIBProd. The duo combines six pieces of light/pop music, three for each year of birth of the two musicians, transforming them and giving them a new and unexpected look.
Both works received positive reviews from Blow-Up and Rockerilla magazines, from the webzines Ver Sacrum, Rosa Selvaggia, Darkroom Magazine, Sodapop and Suffissocore, as well as from the blogs Kalteldur, Pomeriggi Perduti and Collettivo Inconscio.
Many tracks from these albums received airplay on CiTR Radio (Canada), Radio Onda Rossa, Fango Radio, Radio Base Venezia and Radio Spazio Ivrea (Italy).
Sokushinbutsu Project has also released single tracks for the web labels Camembert Electrique (France) and Ephedrina Netlabel (Italy).
The duo performed at the Klang in Rome, at the Anarres bookshop, Spazio Heart art gallery, La Casa di Alex, convent of S. Maria la Vite in Milan.
In December 2022 the 3 tracks EP "Kristu" was released, together with the poet Massimo Arrigoni.
In April 2023 is released the third LP entitled "The Yōkai Codex", which investigates the relationship between the human being and the manifestation of the spirits of Japanese folklore. Both works are produced by the Italian label IÖR. This last work is composed with the collaboration of the musicians Marco Casiraghi and Andrea Dicò.
In late spring 2023, with drums and percussions Andrea becomes a stable part of the project, which becomes Sokushinbutsu Project Trio.
Currently, the trio is working on a new album that investigates the dimensions of Kronos (The Time): past, present and future of the universe and the mankind.
