Nikos Sotirelis – Ferepafa / Pershephone in the Underworld

I was kindly invited to participate at the Symposium of Contemporary Art at the Ancient Theatre of Philippoi in Greece, in July 2021 with a sonic piece that I was called to create on site, outdoors, in few days during the Symposium, with the use of portable equipment. The theme of the Symposium was the abduction of Persephone by Pluton and their descent down to Hades.

In this particular thematic, our attempt to approach the myth of the abduction of Persephone lies in the creation of 4 sound movements (inspired by the 4 thematic parts), the composition of which was made by the sound artist in the provided space:

a) the love of Zeus and Demeter and the birth of Persephone (universal marriage –cosmic union of amorphous matter and the manifestation of life) / Summer
b) the abduction of Persephone by Pluto and their initiative descent into the dark Kingdom of Hades / Autumn
d) the desperate search for Persephone by her mother Demeter, maternal despair and the withering of the Earth / Winter
e) the final viewing and realization of the eternal cycle of life & seasons – a sweet melancholy of the rebirth / Spring


The sound piece was composed with the use of Modular Synthesizer and various portable synthesis media, as well as the use of geophones, hydrophones, contact microphones and portable field recorders, which helped us to record frequencies and sounds of the archeological site surroundings , and let us integrate the imprinted sound memories of the area into our final project. A small number of participants in my field recording workshop as an interactive walk came in touch with the portable recording equipment and recorded soundscapes that became part of the final sonic piece.

During the last day of the Symposium, a small sound installation was set up in the Theater area for the final Viewing. 6 male and 6 female volunteers (as in the Olympic Dodecatheon, that symbolize the absolute balance of female and male forces in Nature) participated in an improvisational sound act, where i united and present live the 4 sound movements, which were composed the previous days, into a single self-contained complete work.

The volunteers were seated blindfolded in a circlular diataxis around the perimeter of the Theater, because as soon as the darkness falls, the spiritual Light is rekindled, and thus allow themselves to witness not the visual but the inner Vision (which becomes stronger by the absence of image), enjoying the short action, as an experiential sound and almost meditative experience, in a particularly energetically fuelled space, that of the Ancient Philippi Theater, trying to approach the initiatory Orphic & Pythagorean dimension of the practices of the ancient inhabitants of this place, through focused hearing.
