from New frontiers of electronic music, released June 30, 2017
Rob Michalchuk was born in Brantford, and raised in a rural southwestern Ontario tobacco farming community named Burford for most of his early life. He moved on his own to Brantford, then to Hamilton, Toronto and finally back to Brantford. Rob started his musical training at age 11 in 1988 with Brantford's Telephone City Musical Society playing alto saxophone. He then had private lessons on the piano studying Royal Conservatory level material. It wasn't until 1993 that Rob started to perform live in a Brantford punk music group called Cartoon Khaki. The band gigged actively until 1997. In 2003, Rob started to go solo with his performance art and noise music project, Food. Food acted as a gateway to other esoteric-abstract sound projects, often collaborating with other Brantford artists in duets. Eventually that led him to becoming a regular satellite member of the Hamilton based noise and experimental group Fossils. Never being typecast into one genre or art style, Rob has also written songs on the acoustic guitar, singing about his emotionally intense life experiences, in an deeply personal esoteric manner. Another music project of Rob's is Pro⋆ Stars. That features Rob as a vocalist performing cartoon theme songs with long time musical collaborator Jeff Reniers, formerly of Cartoon Khaki. As well as being a musician, Rob has also run Poor Little Music, his own label, since 2007. Its focus is on experimental and obscure forms of musical art. Poor Little Music's physical releases take many forms, from the conventional cassettes, to eccentric handcrafted pieces. In addition, he's curated a monthly music series in Brantford, BTFD Music Night, since 2008. BTFD Music Night has always been geared to more obscure forms of music and art born in Brantford or brought in different diverse talents to the same stage. Rob's involvement in the Brantford community stems into historical realms. He's worked at the Brant Museum and Archives for five years, and also volunteers at the Personal Computer Museum. This passion has spurred his interest in preserving the history of local Brant County musical artists. He's been collecting and documenting information since he started to perform live in 1994.
