José Valente
Born in Porto, Portugal. He graduated with the Highest Distinction classical viola at the Kaertner Landes Konservatorium in Austria and jazz at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. He is currently finishing his PhD at the University of Coimbra at the Royal College for the Arts, under the guidance of painter António Olaio. Among others we has worked with: Grammy award winner Paquito d'Rivera, Joshua Redman, Dave Douglas, Hank Roberts, Don Byron, classical Indian music masters Shakir Kahn, Vikas Tripathi, Galician awarded pianist Alberto Conde, Jason Kao Hwang, Daniel Levin. Founding member of the ACIES String Quartet, member of the HUMAN EVOLUTION project, and creator of the international collective/band EXPERIENCES OF TODAY (EOT) with who he performed in many festivals and recorded an album.
Significant concerts: Banff Summer Festival, Dizzys Club at Lincoln Center, 16ª Bienal de Cerveira, Carnegie Hall (invited soloist), Serralves Foundation, International Jazz Encounters of Coimbra, Paredes de Coura Festival, Imaxinasons Festival, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Teatro Maria Matos, Teatro Campo Alegre, Union Square Park in New York (SOLO Concert); Rauf R. Denktas Cultur and Congress Center in Famagusta; Dance House Nicosia; Jazz no Parque Festival; Festival IKFEM; Noble Salon of the Clérigos Tower, etc. He usually collaborates in multidisciplinary projects with, among others: visual artist Paulo Mendes, visual artist and poet Marta Bernardes (Fabulosas Fábulas em Terra de Nenhures), visual artist Chico Santos (Brazil), and choreographer Mafalda Deville (Unconnected). Lectured conferences at the Royal College for the Arts of the University of Coimbra; Architecture Faculty of the University of Oporto; Superior School of Education of Coimbra; Post-ip'13 at the Departament for Music at the University of Aveiro; Conservatorio Superior de Musica La Corunha; Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Vigo; Conservatório de Música de Bragança; Conservatório de Música de Viseu. He has participated in several radio and TV shows such as: WGBO Radio; RTP2; Antena 2; Antena 3. Was interviewed and wrote for magazines, among others: Jazz.PT; MACA Magazine; Revista Via Latina, Xpressingmusic (site), Faro de Vigo, Mutante, Musiquim (site), A Trompa (site), bodyspace (site), RFI (rádio France Internacional), TSF, SIC, Culturartmag, San Jose Mercury News.
Significant composition commissions: "Sem Abrigo" (honourably mention at Prémio Composição Lopes-Graça 2009); soundtrack for “Sagrado” by Nuno Grande; “Amarelo Schwartz” for the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra; “INVASION”; “Sonata for Viola and Empty Cube” for the EMPTY CUBE project; “Ninguém é Original” for the Centro Internacional José de Guimarães. He was the first Portuguese to be invited to be resident artist at the Djerassi Residency for Artists Program in 2012 in California, USA. After the residency he has awarded with The HANNAH S. AND SAMUEL A. COHN MEMORIAL FOUNDATION ENDOWED FELLOWSHIP.
