The Outsider is part of a series of works inspired on the tales of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. The abstract language of his works agrees with the essential abstraction of music itself. As these are pieces for one recorder player I am pushing the possibilities of the instruments by creating polyphonic canonical counterpoint and other effects that alter the sound properties: time, timbre and space. I use the canonical laws of counterpoint and proportions* together with the technology (i.e. digital processing) that allows this music to be played live. Some other pieces belonging to this series are monophonic but they require extensive use of live electronics, again I must insist in the practicality of these pieces in a live situation.
For The Outsider I used a tenor recorder and two Eventide H9 stompboxes. This strict Canon at the unison starts as a slow triple time bar and H9a records and reproduces the signal two bars later. Half way the proportional pulse changes to binary and syncopations occur frequently thus creating a floating rhythmical texture. H9 B is only used at the end to “freeze” the final bar and create a chord.
About proportions*: I use this term to make reference to the use of proportional perfect (triple) and imperfect (double) values in music notation. During the late Middle Ages, some European music blended the infinite possibilities of rhythmical subtleties by unifying the French and the North Italian schools of music. Ars Subtilior, the subtlest art, is the result of this rhythmical and metaphysical experiment. Within a given space of time many rhythms can coexist providing that they “occupy” the same amount of time and never loose their individuality. This “technique” provides an invaluable expressionist tool I use in my canonical works.
